a night of chekhov focuses on three of anton chekhov’s shorter works that are not as frequently staged as his major works, offering audiences a compact way to experience a broader range of the playwright’s material in one sitting. the evening includes one intermission and runs approximately 95–110 minutes total. The program includes swan song, the proposal, and the bear.
swan song (15-20 min) an aging actor wakes up drunk, alone, and past his prime in an empty theatre after his farewell performance, only to find himself face to face with his own legacy. When his elderly prompter Nikita appears from the shadows, the two men share a final, unexpected reckoning with time, talent, and everything left unsaid. Disoriented, tender, and quietly devastating, this short gem opens the evening with a bittersweet meditation on talent, regret, and the passage of time. Chekhov at his most intimate.
the proposal (25-35 min) A man arrives at his neighbor's home with one simple intention, to propose marriage. What follows is anything but simple. Misunderstandings pile on misunderstandings, pride gets in the way of love, and two people who want exactly the same thing somehow manage to make it nearly impossible. A masterclass in comic escalation.
the bear (25-35 min) A stubborn creditor storms the home of a recently widowed woman, demanding payment and refusing to leave. She refuses to be bullied. He refuses to back down. What begins as a confrontation becomes something neither of them expected. Explosive, ridiculous, and deeply human, the perfect close to the evening.
